1 Year Anniversary

Okay....I did it!!! I've lasted 1 year living in Saudi Arabia!! Ohmigod, there was a time I didn't think I would last, and I fantasized about leaving SA at least 5 times during that year. But...here I am...still hangin', and no longer fansizing about my escape. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome. LOL...Roland, my husband is Swedish. Anyway...during that time, I've had a lot of questions come my way from family, friends, and from a few of the thousands of people who have watched my videos on YouTube. Today...1 year in...I've answered some of those questions, in the video below.

i am glad that you have made it up to a 1 year here safely, lol and i agree things don't change it's our attitude that's need to be changed.
as for the media and their way of showing saudi arabia !! i think some of it are not true at all, of course i understand your answer but i guess that's this is part of the problem is that most westerners live amongest themslves and in compounds where they have no knowledge or understanding of the saudi culture or traditions.again it's your answer and you are free to say whatever you want but it's just maybe the two cultures need to know each other better. and thanx for the video blog, you seems really nice lady :)

@ Wafa...we will have to agree to disagree on that one. The westerners live on a complex amongst themselves because honestly....that's the only what most of them could voluntarily live in SA.

@Jackie - Thanks!! Hope all is well with U!!

Hello Ben, Thanks for stopping by.

If you decide to work and move to SA, where would you reside (Eastern Provence, Riyadh)? This will make a difference as to "how to survive" and if my advice is worth getting. lol.

Hi,
I love your posts. I've been reading them for a while to help me get a feel of Saudi.I'm Anita, a Registered Nurse. I will work in Riyadh @ King Faisal Hospital for one year starting 2/04/10 and will live on the hospital compound. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello Anita...Thanks for stopping by.

Any advice I would give will depend a lot on who you are. For example...where are you from? What are your hobbies? Are you a party person? Are you outgoing or reserved? The reason I'm stating this is because I think it makes a difference on how you adjust. If you come from a big city and you love that...your adjustment is going to be different than the person coming from a small town...especially in regards to expectations. On top of that...I'm not familiar with how things are in Riyadh. I hear that Riyadh is a lot different than living in the Eastern Provence (where I'm residing), and it's different than living in Jeddah. I actually hear, out of the 3 the Riyadh is the toughest. The biggest piece of overall advice is...don't expect anything to flow smoothly...and get over it when you're looking at things you know, " this just isn't right". Because you're an outsider and things will never change for you.

I have an idea. Come to work in United Arab Emirates. :))) I'm a little bias. But, that said, being an American, and living in another country, is something very different. I moved here three years ago. I was in culture shock. ;)
