The Biggest C-Block Ever

C-Block:  The act of preventing someone from doing what they want to do.   This term is typically used by guys who are trying to hook up...and someone is "blocking" this activity. Guys typically use this to describe the ugly girl...who is trying to prevent her cute friend from meeting a guy.  Or, the hater guy, who is trying to prevent his friend from hooking up.

I use this term for anyone or anything that is trying to prevent me from doing what I want to do.  For example...I was blocked from going to an Astrology site.  I was also prevented from downloading Firefox, a web browser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please DO NOT attempt to try to explain this mess to me, and why it's so.  I dont care.   I'd understand if it was porn. But...Astrology?!!!!  A Web Browser?!!!!!!!  I will NEVER accept anyone trying to have authority over me.  Ever.  I resent it. Even if I act like I'm going along, I hate it, and inside I'm cursing them.  Period.

My dad swears he was prevented from visiting the Good Housekeeping website!

By the way I'm pretty sure astrology is un-Islamic.

It is extremely frustrating when that happens. I am strongly apposed to web censorship. I believe it actually dose more harm than good. The fact of the matter is that there is always a way to get around it and get what you want. Kids are much more net savvy then there parents. What censorship did is it gave parents an excuse not to control or monitor there kids web usage. As a result kids in Saudi are always exposed to improper material all the time.

At any rate I am surprised about what you not being able to get FireFox. I am using it right now. Go for the official site(http://www.firefox.com). Up until this comment it is accessible. Astrology is a tough call since the do actually block some of there sites for reasons that are beyond me.

This is not something that you have to live with here. There are different solutions to this. Solutions that range from a proxy server to remote connecting to a PC outside Saudi. but the easiest way to get a satellite connection.

You can find magazines with Astrology sections in Saudi, Newspapers and books for it. Why not get it online. I don't read any Astrology stuff and I'm not even sure what my sign is but others do and the should not be prevented from it.

The entire argument of blocking stuff like this is wrong. People will still find a way to get it and it is simply wrong to try and control what people can read and can't.

If the clerics or the gov. think it is not suitable material then the should educate people to avoid it Not put up a useless wall and hope fore the best.

I have a ton of Astrology books. We'll see if they make it into "The Kingdom". Some were accidentally packed (I swear those packers will pack up your kid if it's lying around...they wrap and pack everything!) with my other books so...we'll see.

Hell...I just wanted to read my daily horoscope to see if it matched my mood.

Your welcome. I'm an IT guy so if you need any help in this sort o stuff I will try my best to give it.

As per the Horoscope, I know there are sites that are not blocked, you just need to google daily horoscope and look around till you find one that works with you.

Your books will probably go through with no issues. Restrictions have been eased recently (last few years) it all comes done to your luck and the mood of the guy who will do the checking. Most probably there will be no issue. The easiest way to get new books is from Bahrain (probably you will not be able to go there till your hubby finishes his probation). people that check on the border very rarely will stop you from bringing in books or movies from there.

why not just pay for Orbit satnet internet service and be done with it? It isn't censored and you don't have to deal w/ not viewing any website for who knows what reason

I've heard that the satellite internet service has extremely slow download rates/speeds. Is this the case?

Ideally, I'd want something similar to what I had in the states; cable internet service with a T1 connection, is there something here with similar download speeds?

Hell Freak said...

Unfortunately it is true. Orbit & Showtime both provide Satnet services but the charges are high and sped is not that good. They give a shared bandwidth connection which means that you will probably never get the speed you are subscribing for (512 Kbps will be split between you and a number of other users so your speed depends on how many are using at the time). plus, unless the upgraded there services, the speeds they are offering are not that high to begin with.

So for fast downloading here you have 2 options:

1. DSL: most popular form for fast net in Saudi. Speeds up to 10 Mbps. For this option you have to check with the compound you are staying in. I don't know about RT but for others here in Khobar they have deals with only 1 ISP (Internet Service Provider) and will only allow you to get it through them.

2. UMTS: I use this service which is provided by the mobile companies (Jawal & Mobily, not sure about Zain) it costs me 350 S.R (93$) per month. I use this since I travail a lot because of my work. it is pretty decent with download speeds of up to 2Mbps (don't believe the add that claims it is 7.5 Mbps, IT IS NOT TRUE) The only thing you should consider if you want to get this service is weather you have 3G coverage in your area. If you don't the speed goes down to less than 14 Kbps!!!!

Hope this helps

Internet like the states.. do you hear me laughing from Khobar?

Orbit can get slow it all depends on what you sign up for. But it is uncensored which is why many get it. I don't like being told I can't view a web page so I got it. The downloads were fine, speed so so, it is faster in Bahrain (where I live during the week) but all of them are slow compared to the US.

Nzingha: That was you!! I was wonder who that was laughing at me. LOL.

And...I don't know what was going on that night...but I was eventually able to download Firefox.

have you tried using a proxy for the sites which are blocked?

BCIS said...

Hello Aafke...I think I'm stuck behind the Aramco proxy. I'm slowly starting to "get over it". At least I can get on Facebook and ost to my blog. =)

I'm thinking of subscribing to an international satellite service (i.e. AT& T or Verizon) once I get back to the States in about a month.

To unblock sites just download HotSpot Shield it's a programs that runs with your browsers and all you have to do is click connect and it works its magic. But since the original HotSpot Shield site is blocked (go figure LOL) youll have to find it on other sites like cnet.com and other downloading sites.
Enjoy :)
